Understanding Airsoft Guns How They Work

How Do Airsoft Guns Work?

Airsoft guns are becoming increasingly popular and for good reason. From recreational play to training simulations, airsoft guns provide an accurate and relatively safe way to enjoy shooting sports, practice new tactical maneuvers, and even have some fun with friends. But how do these guns work?

At its core, an airsoft gun is a hobby-grade replica of the real thing, typically using a plastic construction with some metal parts. Unlike paintball, airsoft guns typically fire 6mm or 8mm projectiles made of plastic, biodegradable material, or even gel. Airsoft guns are powered by electric, spring, gas, or co2 and use a hop up system to create spin for increased range and accuracy.

Electric airsoft guns are the most common and come in a few different types including AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns) and GBB (Gas Blowback). AEGs use a battery pack (generally 8.4v - 11.1v) and a motor to drive a piston which in turn propels the BB out the barrel. high-end AEGs usually have adjustable FPS settings via a Mosfet board allowing the user to set the power output to match the field or simulation's rules.

GBBs use an electric circuit to open the valves of a gas canister and allow the gas to flow out and drive the BB. The force of the gas and the shooter's finger positioning determine whether or not the gun is semi or fully automatic. Gas guns can be temperamental on cold days and should be prewarmed to ensure perfect performance.

Spring airsoft guns are powered by springs and are most appreciated for their mechanical simplicity and durability. Unlike AEGs and GBBs, there are no electrical parts and the shooter must cock and shoot the gun for each shot. Springs guns are commonly found in sniper rifles and some pistols due to their high FPS potential and accuracy. Spring airsoft guns can often require heavier BBs to achieve maximum performance.

Gas airsoft guns are powered by a pressurized gas such as Green Gas or Co2, which is released as a burst to propel the BBs. The rate of fire and muzzle velocity of gas guns are consistent even on cold days, making them a great choice for speedsoft. Gas guns generally use higher-grade BBs such as plastic and biodegradable.

No matter the airsoft gun, one of the most important components is the hop up system. The hop up is what gives the BBs spin traveling through the barrel, causing the BBs to travel further and with greater accuracy. Hop up systems come in many forms from rubber buckings to dial adjust hop up chambers. Quality hops will often greatly improve the performance of the airsoft gun.

In addition to the gun, there are a few common accessories that can help improve performance and add to the fun. Most airsoft guns come with a hop up system already installed, but it is not uncommon to upgrade the hop up or the entire barrel. Magazines can be purchased for many guns to increase the amount of ammo or change the physical look of the gun. Lastly, optics can be mounted onto the gun, allowing for better accuracy and the ability to target further away.

Airsoft guns are a great way to safely enjoy shooting sports. Powered by electric, spring, gas, or Co2, airsoft guns have a variety of types and styles and come with all sorts of attachments to help improve accuracy and overall performance. With all these options available, it is no wonder airsoft guns are becoming so popular.
